Are you frustrated with starting over every time you try to make a change?
Do motivation lapses leave you feeling stuck and powerless?
If so, you're not alone. Many of us struggle to maintain lasting progress, often because we focus too much on big changes too quickly.
The good news? Transformation often begins with just one simple habit.
In this post, we'll explore how identifying and nurturing a keystone habit can create a domino effect of positive change, leading to lasting habits and a more confident, healthier you.
Why Your Habits Shape Your Life – More Than You Think
Have you ever noticed how one small change can ripple out into major improvements?
That’s the essence of a keystone habit—the small yet impactful practice that influences many areas of your life.
In S2 E19 - The Domino Effect (release date June 22, 2026), I share about my my weight loss struggles and how I plan to gain self-improvement, emphasizing that my success is rooted in one habit: going to the gym.
Years of experimenting with different diets and programs taught me that food habits were formed long before I ever started dieting. Food became comfort during happiness, sadness, boredom, or frustration. These conditioned habits created a cycle that has been hard to break, no matter how many diets I have tried.
The breakthrough? Recognizing that a single habit—regular gym visits—starts a domino effect, improves my sleep, more confidence, extra energy, and healthier decisions.
Key Insight: Your habits set the foundation for your overall well-being. The right keystone habit can reset this foundation and influence multiple life areas simultaneously.
What Is a Keystone Habit and Why Is It So Powerful?
The term “keystone habit” comes from the idea that certain habits hold everything together—like the keystone in an arch. Remove the keystone from the arch, it can fall down.
Keystone habits naturally spark positive changes across various domains without requiring excessive willpower, they create a domino effect.
For me, going to the gym isn’t just about physical activity; it is about triggering a cascade of benefits:
Feeling stronger
Making better food choices
Sleeping better
Having more energy
Feeling more confident
This chain reaction illustrates why focusing on just one keystone habit can be more effective than trying to overhaul your entire lifestyle overnight.
Practical Tip: Identify a habit that influences at least three areas of your life. It could be something like daily walking, journaling, or drinking water first thing in the morning.
Remember: Your keystone habit doesn’t have to be grand; it just needs to have the potential to trigger multiple positive shifts.
How to Find and Cultivate Your Own Keystone Habit
Finding the right keystone habit starts with self-awareness.
Look at your current behaviors—what’s one habit that, if improved, could create a ripple effect?
For some, it might be:
Taking a daily walk
Making your bed
Practicing gratitude
Tracking expenses
Setting a consistent bedtime
Once identified, commit to that habit with focused intention. Start small—just one courageous decision each day. For me, it was committing to the gym. I am not aiming for perfection but persistence. So far, I am three weeks in and finally starting to like going to the gym.
Remember new habits might not feel comfortable at first - you need to keep plugging away and typically after three weeks it will start to be a new habit. However, according to James Clear’s blog (https://jamesclear.com/new-habit) it can take 66 days or more. So, hang in there - think of the big picture as motivation.
Action Step: Pick one habit to start this week. Repeat it daily, and observe the changes over time. Remember, confidence and transformation don’t come first—it’s the act of starting that matters.
Overcoming Barriers and Negative Keystone Habits
Not all habits are beneficial. Recognizing negative keystone habits, such as staying up too late or people-pleasing, can help you avoid a destructive domino effect.
For instance, neglecting sleep leads to poor energy, unhealthy food choices, and reduced confidence.
Awareness is the first step. Once you catch yourself in a negative pattern, you have the power to replace it with a positive keystone habit.
The Courage to Start Is the Catalyst
Most people try to jump to the final domino—confidence or motivation—without tackling the initial, often tough, first step: courage.
Try to remember that all big changes begin with a single courageous decision to start.
The key message? Don’t wait to feel confident or motivated. Instead, focus on initiating one small, positive habit. Over time, that habit builds confidence naturally. For me, the gym is starting to be a foundation, not just a workout routine but a catalyst for self-trust and resilience.
Encouragement: Your first domino might be as simple as a 10-minute walk daily. It’s not about perfection; it’s about showing up consistently.
Your Turn: Find Your First Domino
Reflect on which habit, if cultivated, could start a ripple of improvements in your life. It could be:
Drinking a glass of water upon waking
Journaling briefly each day
Making your bed every morning
Remember, this isn’t about doing everything at once. Choose one habit—your first domino—and commit to it. The effect may surprise you.
Mantra for the Week: “I will start with the first domino.”
Final Thoughts: Trust the Process
Transformation isn’t about giant leaps; it’s about consistent, courageous steps.
Every keystone habit begins with a single decision—one repeated courageous act.
As you nurture that habit, confidence, motivation, and transformation will follow naturally.
Trust that your strength lies within and that you are capable of creating lasting change—one small step at a time.
Your future self will thank you. Listen to the full episode - S2 E19 The Domino Effect, release date June 22, 2026.
